Zemel Choir Concert
Touro Celebrates 250
Congregation Jeshuat Israel at Touro Synagogue will host a benefit concert by the Zemel Choir of London, England on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 9:00 PM in the synagogue immediately following Havdalah services. Tickets for the concert are $10.00 per person and all proceeds will be donated to the Louis and Goldie Chester “Full Plate” Kosher Food Pantry and the Newport “Community Meal Program”.
The Zemel Choir, established in 1955, is proud of its international reputation as one of the world’s finest mixed-voice Jewish Choirs. Their repertoire embraces the traditional Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Yiddish, and Israeli Jewish cultures. They have performed in major venues throughout the UK and overseas. In addition to performing well-known favorites, they have presented new music often specially commissioned for them by contemporary composers. The choir has maintained an exemplary reputation as a result of professional musical direction and a strong commitment to rehearsals by its members. They come together not only to sing but also to be part of a warm and friendly social group. To find out more about the Zemel Choir please visit their web-site at www.zemelchoir.org.
Congregation Jeshuat Israel is pleased to sponsor the Zemel Choir concert as part of their 250th celebration of the 1st dedication of Touro Synagogue in December 1763 and also to commemorate the Charter of 1663 that established Rhode Island Providence and the Plantations as a colony “tolerant of all religions” and to participate in this “lively experiment” . The concert also coincides with the re-dedication of Touro Synagogue May 25, 1883 when the synagogue was re-opened after being closed due to lack of membership after the Revolutionary War.
Due to limited seating in the synagogue we ask that you purchase tickets ($10 per person) in advance by sending a check made out to: Congregation Jeshuat Israel; and mailed to: Congregation Jeshuat Israel, 85 Touro St., Newport, RI, 02840 or call Susan Woythaler at 401-846-2125.
